Why is BIOS protection important?

    • Global dependency on IT systems and PC devices drives the motivations for attacks that target the device Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)
    • Types of attacks include:
      • Rootkits that attempt to establish persistent malware inside the BIOS, independent of the operating system
      • Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks on the BIOS that could render PCs useless on a massive scale
    • Threats to the BIOS and othe   r devices with embedded firmware are being actively researched and published
    • The National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) has publicly acknowledged this emerging threat and published a set of BIOS protection guidelines (NIST SP 800-147) in an attempt to encourage the industry to mitigate the threat.
